1 COMMON GOAL –
HOSPITALITY IN PERSON
Tradition and hospitality are of paramount importance at the Hotel GOLDENE SONNE. Built in the early 15th century, this classically stylish hotel has been owned by the Baier family since 1920 and has always enjoyed success as a family-run hotel.
In 2020, we celebrated our 100th anniversary as Baier family property.
Overview

Founding of the city
In 1204, the Wittelsbach Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria founded the city of Landshut. Just a few decades later—between 1250 and 1300—the “Old Town” was expanded into the “New Town,” and the house at NEUSTADT 520, among others, was built.

Wedding of Duke George the Rich
Landshut experienced a glorious period between 1392 and 1503 under the rule of the three “rich” dukes, Henry, Louis, and George. During this period, the city achieved prosperity and high political importance.
The outward sign of the outstanding position of the Landshut dukes was the magnificent wedding of Duke George the Rich with the Polish king’s daughter Hedwig in 1475, which was attended by Emperor Frederick III, along with many high-ranking noblemen of the German Empire. Since 1903, the “Landshut Wedding” has been reenacted every four years with more than 2,000 participants.

Acquisition
On October 5, 1920, Albert and Therese Baier, then tenants of the neighboring Hofreiter restaurant, acquired the Goldene Sonne beer and wine bar, which had suffered greatly due to numerous changes of tenant and ownership over the past decades.

Hotel operation
Hotel operations commence with
12 guest rooms.

Rooms
The business is expanded by 12 rooms. The plan to further expand the business is dashed with the outbreak of World War II.
Kriegsende
Unmittelbar nach Kriegsende wird das Haus NEUSTADT 520 von 30 amerikanischen Offizieren beschlagnahmt, die Familie muss das Hotel innerhalb 24 Stunden verlassen.

Return
In November 1948, the family was allowed to return and began the cleanup work.

Reopening
After its reopening in the spring of 1949, further expansion of the hotel began. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the new rooms in the rear building that fall.
Renovation
The destroyed rooms and others are being renovated so that hotel operations can resume. The building now has 32 guest rooms. A double room costs 9.00 DM.

Karl & Maria Baier
Both have actively contributed over the past years and are taking over the family business.

Modernization and expansion
Worth mentioning is the installation of the first hotel elevator in
Landshut in 1969, as well as the demolition and reconstruction of the rear building, the beer garden and terrace, between 1976 and 1978.
The number of guest rooms thus increased to 54.

Demolition and reconstruction of the rear building, including the beer garden and terrace. This will increase the number of guest rooms to 54.
Karl Baier died suddenly in November 1988, and his children, Karl and Sybille Baier, joined the business. They undertook numerous renovations and modifications to further adapt the business to modern requirements. The renovation of the kitchens, the outdoor area, and the Sonne Hall were just a few of these.

"Kramergasse 553"
Karl Baier acquired the historic building at Kramergasse 553, where two apartments were built in 1994. Over the years, the restaurant was renovated and the reception redesigned.
Karl & Birgit Baier
Karl and Birgit Baier took over the then 2* hotel from Maria Baier.

Sonne-Platzl
The first new building began with the demolition of the former “Löchl” in 2001, on whose site today stands the Sonne-Platzl.

Family suite
The house at Kramergasse 553, which was privately occupied until 2002, was converted into a spacious family suite at the end of 2002.

Room & hallway
On the third floor, two additional rooms were created in a newly constructed connecting building between the old and new buildings. The hallway underwent extensive renovations in the same year.

Sonne-Salettl
The summer arbor and beer garden were demolished. The beer garden was redesigned with genuine Lower Bavarian granite and real wood paneling for the sun lounge. A former residential building was converted into two new junior suites with views of the Hofberg.

Elevator and suites
The elevator is being replaced with a new one, which now also reaches the 4th floor.
At the same time, two luxurious suites with unique views over Landshut are being built on the 4th floor. Our most beautiful rooms don’t have numbers, but bear the names of the founders, Albert and Therese.

Junior suites
In February, we’ll be renovating the interiors of our junior suites, which will be completely redesigned with wooden floors, new paint colors, and new beds. Two of our double rooms will also be given a new lease of life.

Anniversary
On October 5, 2020, tradition and hospitality have been a priority and lived by the Baier family for 100 years.

Renovation
To meet increasing demands, two rooms are being combined to create an additional junior suite. Furthermore, additional rooms are being remodeled and equipped with modern amenities.

Renovation
Further rooms will be given a new look and an additional and spacious junior suite will be created.
